A simple explanation of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing): When exposed to a disturbing event, the brain can store the memory in a way that feels like the event is still happening or will happen again. EMDR facilitates the movement of the memory to a part of the brain that experiences the event to be in the past. The brain will let go of the bad and keep all the good. This allows the brain to get past the past. EMDR is used to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD often occurs after experiences such as neglect or abuse in childhood, military combat, vehicle crashes, physical assault, sexual assault or rape. EMDR is also used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive thoughts and compulsions, panic attacks, phantom limb pain, eating disorders, phobias and addictions.
A simple explanation of CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy): When an event takes place, the brain has an automatic thought which is often distressing and can lead to anxiety, depression or other unwanted feelings. Those unwanted and negative feelings lead to unhealthy behavior. CBT is a framework to challenge catastrophic thinking with realistic and rational thoughts. The brain can address irrational thoughts by pairing them with more accurate and rational thoughts and this leads to positive behavioral changes.
A simple explanation of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a specific type of Cognitive Behavior Therapy to help better treat borderline personality disorder. Since its development, it has also been used for helping people find emotional regulation and the ability to focus on other therapies such as EMDR.
Medication Assisted Therapy: Medication assessment and management along with psychotherapy.
